System requirements for RBM

Remote Background Manager (RBM) is available in two editions: Standard and Advanced. System requirements vary depending on the edition and the operating system of the endpoint and technician devices.

Endpoint requirements

Standard edition (Windows only)

  • Operating system: Windows Server 2008 (or later) or Windows 7 (or later). See Supported operating systems: Windows.
  • Agent: Windows Agent must be installed
  • Network: Ability to make direct outgoing TCP connections, or access via an HTTP proxy or SOCKS server.
  • Access: Unrestricted access to Master and Node addresses

Advanced edition (Windows and Mac)

  • Operating system:
  • Agent:
    • Windows Agent or Take Control (N-able) enabled
    • Mac Agent 3.5.0 RC (or later), or Take Control (N-able) enabled
  • Permissions: On macOS, some features may require user authorization (e.g., Full Disk Access). To streamline access, use Device Management for Apple to manage permissions.
  • Network: Ability to make direct outgoing TCP connections or availability of an HTTP proxy or a SOCKS server.

Technician requirements

Standard edition (Windows only)

  • Operating system: Windows Server 2008 (or later) or Windows 7 (or later). See Supported operating systems: Windows.
  • Browser-based viewer:
    • Supported browsers: Latest two versions of Firefox or Google Chrome
    • Browser must support WebSocket connections
  • Network: Ability to make direct outgoing TCP connections, or access via an HTTP proxy or SOCKS server.

Advanced edition (Windows and Mac)

  • Operating system:
  • Viewer:
    • Remote Background Viewer or Take Control (N-able) Viewer must be installed
    • JRE 1.6 or later required
  • Network: Ability to make direct outgoing TCP connections, or access via an HTTP proxy or SOCKS server.

The Advanced edition of Remote Background Manager uses the Take Control (N-able) module. As a result, the Take Control (N-able) Windows service runs on devices using Remote Background Manager (Advanced), even if Take Control is not enabled.

Take Control module 7.00.08 introduced support for Passportal. When this version is installed on the technician’s device and the technician has a Passportal account, they can retrieve the correct endpoint password and log in at the start of the session.
