Install the Take Control Proxy

For scenarios where a network's internet access is behind a firewall, use the Take Control Proxy to provide support to your customer.

All Take Control agents can be configured to point towards this proxy, which mitigates unwanted firewall configuration changes and allows easy access to your devices.

Start the installation

  1. Open the following ports on the Proxy machine to enable inbound and outbound connections:
    1. TCP 8082 (only for LAN traffic) - the port used for Take Control Agents and Applets to communicate with the proxy. This is the port defined on the Bindings tab of the proxy interface.
    2. TCP 443 (for LAN and WAN traffic) - the port used by the Direct Connect feature, which needs to be set if Direct Connect is enabled. Route this port from the WAN to the proxy machine. Update this configuration if you change the Direct Connect port on the proxy interface.
    3. UDP 43210 (only for LAN traffic) - this port is used for the automatic setup of the Agents and Applets. If the port is not available, additional set up is needed for each computer with the Agent installed.
  2. From the left Navigation Menu in the Admin Area, select Management > Proxies > Add to open the Download dialog.
  3. Select Download in the new window to start the download.
  4. Alternative download link: In the Admin Area, select Downloads, and then select the Windows button in the N-able Proxy section.

  5. When the download finishes, run the executable and follow the install wizard.
  6. Enter a Proxy name and description when prompted and then choose REGISTER.
  7. Select each configuration tab in the Proxy interface:
    • Home: You start and stop the proxy in this tab. It displays the proxy status using a traffic light system:
      • red: stopped
      • yellow: error or busy
      • green: working normally
    • Bindings: You specify the IP addresses and ports for the proxy to receive connections from Agents within the LAN. The default IP address is 0.0.0.0 to include all Network Interface Cards (NICs). If you have more than one NIC, specify which adapter or IP address is used to receive the requests.

The default port is 8082. Make sure no other services are using this port on the proxy machine.

    • Direct Connect: You enable the Direct Connect feature by selecting the checkbox. You can also set which port to use if the default port 443 is unsuitable. This is not recommended as it can interfere with establishing a connection. Choose Test to verify if the port is reachable. Select Save to apply the port you have configured.
    • IP Filter: You can set which IP addresses may connect to the proxy as an extra security measure. Add a mixture of single IP addresses (only the Agents or Applets on those specific IP's can connect) and IP address ranges (all the Agents or Applets running on machines within that IP address range can connect).
    • Log: Presents all the events related to the use of the proxy (connected machines, sessions established or IP changes). You can suspend or clear the log. However, the proxy continues to register activity and debug information. This can be found at c:\programdata for Windows 7 or later.
    • Service: By default, the Proxy is installed as a Windows application. In the Service tab, you can install it as a Windows service, which will then start automatically (as N-able Remote Support Proxy) when the device boots up.
  8. To view all installed proxies, select Management > Proxies to manage your Take Control Proxy server installations.
  9. Choose any proxy to show all of it's information, such as external port, installed version, when the proxy was last seen, and all associated IP addresses.
  10. Choose Delete to remove a proxy.

The Delete option permanently disables the proxy’s communication with the Take Control network. To complete the process, uninstall the proxy manually on the corresponding machine so that it cannot be reactivated.
