Add a content token

Before you can add a content token for a customer, the customer must have an Apple Business (ABM) account with apps purchased, and they must have devices enrolled in Device Management for Apple.

To manage and distribute apps for devices enrolled in Device Management for Apple, you must generate a content token (formerly server token) using your customer's ABM account and add it to Device Management for Apple.

Add a content token for a customer

  1. In the left navigation, go to Dashboards > Device Management for Apple.
  2. Select Apps.

Each customer has one content token. The token list shows its status, number of apps purchased, and expiry date.

  3. Select Upload content token.
  4. Select the Customer to associate with this content token and select Next.

  5. Select Open Apple Business to go to Apple Business and sign in using your customer's account.

  6. In the customer's Apple Business account:
    1. Go to Settings, then select Payments and Billing.
    2. Choose Apps and Books.
    3. Locate your content token in the list and select Download.
    • A content token can only be managed by one MDM provider. When you add a content token, if Device Management for Apple detects that it is managed by another MDM, you can claim management of the content token or cancel the action.
    • If you do not see an option to download the N-able content token in Apple Business, Apple's built‑in device management service may be associated with the account. This service acts as the default MDM service in Apple Business. When it is associated with devices, apps and books are automatically assigned to it. This hides the option to download the content token required by N‑able. To make the N-able content token available, turn off Apple's built‑in device management.
      • In Apple Business, go to Devices > Management Services, and edit the MDM association appropriately, then return to Settings > Payments and Billing > Apps and Books and download the N-able content token.
      • For details on how to turn off Apple's built-in MDM, see the official documentation from Apple.
  7. In Device Management for Apple, go back to the Upload content token wizard and select Next.
  8. Select browse, or drag and drop the content token downloaded from Apple Business into the box.

  9. Select Next.
  10. Review the customer and content token details, and select Confirm.

The content token is added to the Apps tab.

You can add as many content tokens to Device Management for Apple as you need because each of your customers will have their own content token.

Apple content tokens expire annually. When you add a content token for a customer, the expiry date displays in the Apps tab. You must renew content tokens to avoid interruption of service.
