Add device types to the device classes list

N-able N-central includes a list of default device classes to associate device types with in the user interface. A device class enables you to group network devices. This help with tracking and monitoring of many customer devices.

If you have a Professional Server license, you can adjust this list to suit your requirements. You can remove classes or add a custom device class. You cannot remove the default device classes.

You cannot delete a device class that has any associated devices. You need to re-associate the devices to another device class or delete the associated devices. If you delete the associated devices, you must wait until the daily maintenance task is run. This task occurs between 2:00 am and 4:00 am, after which, you can delete the class.

When you create a new custom device class, you should also create new Service Templates and Notification Templates for the new device class. Both Service Templates and Notification Templates are specific to device classes. Existing templates will not be associated with a new custom device class. This does not prevent individual services and notifications from being associated with a new device class.

Custom Device Classes do not support scheduled tasks.

Once a Custom Device Class has been created, you can not add or remove a Service Type from it.

You can only add custom device classes with the Product Administrator's account on the Product Administrator's Page.

Adding device class is limited on hosted servers with shared partners.

  1. On the Administrator Console in the System Settings > Product Settings area, click Device Classes.
  2. Click Add New.
  3. Enter the class name and select its Service Type.
  4. Click the class name in the list to edit the name.

  5. Click OK.

The new device class appears in the Device Class field when you add or edit a device in the user interface.
