Manually add and update custom properties

This walkthrough shows how to create a custom property and manually update its value for customers, sites, or devices.

Use this workflow to store and maintain information, for example location, owner, department, service tier, contract type, compliance status, or other business-specific details.

In this walkthrough, you will learn how to:

  • Create a custom property.

  • Define where the property applies.

  • Confirm the property is available.

  • Manually update the property value.

  • Use the value in filters, rules, or reporting.

Create a basic custom property

Define a custom property to capture the required data.

  1. Navigate to Administration > Custom Properties.

  2. Select Add.

  3. Select one of the following:

    • By Customers

    • By Devices

  4. Select the property type. For this example, use Text Type.

  5. Enter the Property Name.

  6. Enter a Default Value, leave the value blank, or enter a placeholder value, for example "Not defined", to help identify unpopulated properties.

  7. Define where the property applies:

    Customer custom properties

    • Select the customers or sites the property applies to, then choose the appropriate propagation option for new Service Organizations, Customers, or Sites.

    • To manage properties from one location, create them at the Service Organization (SO) level when possible.

    Device custom properties

    • Select the applicable Operating Systems and Device Classes.

    • Use Device Classes when the property applies to a broad group of devices, for example workstations, laptops, or servers.

  8. Save and propagate updates the whole selection. Confirm this broad change will not overwrite values that must remain unique.

  9. Select Save.

The custom property becomes available based on your selections.

Confirm and update the custom property

After creating the custom property, confirm it appears where expected, then update its value.

For customer custom properties

  1. Open a customer or site where the custom property is applied.

  2. Navigate to the Custom Properties tab.

  3. Confirm the new custom property is listed.

  4. Enter or update the value.

  5. Select Save.

For device custom properties

Single Device

  1. Select a devices matching the property's Operating Systems and Device Classes settings.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Custom Properties.

  3. Confirm the new custom property is listed.

  4. Enter or update the value.

  5. Select Save.

Single Device

  1. Select one or more devices matching the property's Operating Systems and Device Classes settings.

  2. Navigate toCustom Properties.

  3. Confirm the new custom property is listed.

  4. Enter or update the value.

  5. Select Save.

Changes are only applied to the device selection where the custom device property is available.

Confirm the value can be used in a filter

Confirm the custom property value works as expected. This example uses a filter.

  1. Navigate to Configuration > Filters.

  2. Create or update a filter to use the custom property.

  3. Provide the filter details.

  4. In the filter builder, choose one of the following

    • Devices

    • Organizations.

  5. Select the appropriate custom property filter.

  6. Choose the custom property from the list.

  7. Enter or select the value to match

  8. Select Preview to confirm the expected customers, sites, or devices are returned.

  9. Save the filter.

If the expected results are not returned, check:

  • The custom property applies to the customer, site, or device.

  • The value has been entered correctly.

  • The filter uses the correct custom property and value.
