VMware restore

To offer an enhanced solution, standalone Cove Data Protection (Cove) has replaced Backup & Recovery. Where Backup & Recovery has been enabled and continues to be so for devices, the options presented here are still available.

Where Backup & Recovery options are not present on your N-sight RMM dashboard, this means you will now need to use Cove.

To start a 30-day free trial of Cove, click the app switcher in the Product bar, and select Cove Data Protection (Cove).

When restoring to its original location, the Virtual Machine and disks the backup came from must exist in the vCenter/ESX inventory.

If restoring to a different location, the restore target must be a virtual disk exactly the same size, geometry and type as the source disk.

Where the target is not a virtual disk or its size, geometry or type does not match that of the backed up disk the restore will fail.

VMware restorations can only be performed one disk at a time and where the Virtual Machine utilizes a number of disks, these must be selected and restored individually.

An example of performing a VMware restore to an alternative location is covered below:

  1. Create a new empty Virtual Machine with the same hardware configuration as the source (network, disks etc.)
  2. Power on the Virtual Machine
  3. Select the required Virtual Machine disk from the Restore tab in Backup Manager
  4. Choose the disk of the newly created Virtual Machine as a restore target. This must be the same size and geometry as the source
  5. Click Restore
  6. Once restored, verify the Virtual Machine contains the backed up data

If more than one disk is selected for restore an error message is displayed as multiple selections will cause the will cause the restore to fail.

VMware cluster restore

We do not currently support VMware cluster restore of the whole machine, we can perform a restore only from a disk into a disk.
