Transfer Domain Between Admin Accounts

There are two ways in which domains can be transferred from one administrator account to another:

  • Domain Transfer Internally - The admin with existing control of the domain transfers the domain(s) to another admin internally
  • Domain Transfer Externally - The admin with existing control of the domain transfers the domain(s) to another admin externally
  • Forced Migration - A forced migration is performed when the domain cannot be transferred by the existing admin

When moving a domain between administrator accounts the domain inherits the settings and features configured for the new owner. All Admin level settings will be inherited from the new owner.

Domain Transfer Internally

Pre Transfer Steps

Before beginning the internal transfer, the following steps must be carried out:

  1. Delete any cross-domain aliases from both the primary and alias domains
  2. Transfer the domains using the Instructions below

Instructions

  1. As the Admin user with ownership of the domain, log into SpamExperts
  2. Select General > Domains Overview
  3. If you are transferring one Domain:
    1. Select the dropdown alongside the domain
    2. select Transfer Internally
  4. If you are transferring more than one Domain:

    1. Select the checkboxes alongside the domains you want to transfer
    2. Select Transfer Internally from the Apply to selected dropdown at the top or bottom of the domains list
    3. Click Apply
  5. In the Move domains to dialog, select the destination admin from the dropdown
  6. Click Transfer

Alternatively, the current admin can remove the domain from their account, so that the new admin can add the domain(s) to their own account. (Not Recommended)

If the domain is removed, the system will reject email for it and it will require setting up as a new domain for the new Administrator.

Post Transfer Step

Once the domain(s) transfer has completed, the following step should be taken:

  1. Manually add any aliases which are not automatically created

Domain Transfer Externally

  1. As the Admin user with ownership of the domain, log into SpamExperts
  2. Select General > Domains Overview
  3. If you are transferring one Domain:
    1. Select the dropdown alongside the domain
    2. select Transfer Externally
  4. If you are transferring more than one Domain:

    1. Select the checkboxes alongside the domains you want to transfer
    2. Select Transfer Externally from the Apply to selected dropdown at the top or bottom of the domains list
    3. Click Apply
  5. In the Move domains to dialog, enter the destination admin's username

    e.g. admin@demo-domain.invalid

  6. Click Transfer
  7. The new admin will then see the incoming transfer in their own domain Domains Overview page, where the transfer must be accepted. Once this is done, the domain transfer will be complete. If transferring to an admin under you, we would recommend using the Transfer Internally function. For these types of transfer, acceptance is not required.

If the transfer is rejected by the new Admin, the domain will return to the original Admin.

Alternatively, the current admin can remove the domain from their account, so that the new admin can add the domain(s) to their own account. (Not Recommended)

If the domain is removed, the system will reject email for it and it will require setting up as a new domain for the new Administrator.

Forced Migration

A forced migration of a domain from one Admin user to another may be necessary if the existing Admin user is unable to transfer the domain as above.

No domains can be reserved in the system. If there is ownership dispute, the domain will be transferred to the administrator that can demonstrate control of the Domains DNS.

  1. Add a TXT record to the Domains DNS to transfer, with the host of the root of the domain (often referred to as "@") with the value yyyy-mm-dd-transfer-to-adminusername, where:
    • yyyy-mm-dd should be replaced with the current date
    • adminusername should be replaced with the unique admin username. For example 'admin@demo-domain.invalid'
  2. Contact SpamExperts support from an authorized support contact address that belongs to the destination administrator to request the transfer
  3. Our support team will reply to the requester to confirm the transfer and verify the email address
  4. When confirmation has been received, our support team will:
    1. Ensure that the TXT record matches the request
    2. Force-transfer the domain to the new administrator
  5. A force transfer does not require approval by the new Admin.
