Symantec/Veritas Backup Exec

We query Backup Exec's native log files on the local device as these give more accurate and detailed information on the status of the Backup Job than the Windows Event Log.

Backup Exec writes to these logs by default.

  • The default Symantec log locations is:
    • C:\Program Files\SYMANTEC\Backup Exec\NT\Data
  • The default Veritas log locations is:
    • C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data

Depending upon the version, or installation configuration, these locations may be different. We use the registry to check the log file location in order to ensure correct the correct log location is used in the check.

The log file type is XML and they use the format BEX0001.xml. See the examples of the header and footer:

Since the Backup Checks poll the device for the backup results, the results in N-sight RMM are those reported by the Backup software being monitored. If the reported result is Completed with Errors, Completed with Warnings, or a similar response, we recommend you investigate the device the problem and ensure the Backup software can backup the expected data sets.
