Enable Restore-Only Mode

On devices where Backup Manager is already installed, it can be swapped to use Restore-Only Mode by following the steps below.

The backup history will remain accessible on the device for restore, but no backups will be permitted to run during this time.

  1. Log on to the device where Backup Manager is installed
  2. Click on Start and type services.msc
  3. Locate the Backup Service Controller and right click to open the action menu
  4. Select Properties
  5. Stop the service
  6. Open a text editor on the device as an Administrator
  7. Confirm User Access Control to permit changes
  8. Open the Backup Manager configuration file (config.ini)
  9. In the [General] section check for an instance of RestoreOnlyMode
    [General]
    User=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Password=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    EncryptionKey=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    ReadOnlyMode=1
  10. If this exists change =0 to =1

    If this does not exist, add it to the [General] section

  11. This is case sensitive so please ensure it is added correctly and without spaces.

  12. Save and close the file
  13. Return to services.msc
  14. Start the Backup Service Controller service
  15. Confirm the device is in Restore-Only mode by opening the Backup Manager and checking for the Restore-only mode banner

    If you do not see this banner, the device has not successfully entered Restore-Only mode

    Do not click Switch to standard mode until you have completed your required tasks as this will take the device into standard mode and may (depending on configuration) cause a backup to run on the device
