Cove: Error: 'VSS error 0x800423f4' during a backup of System State'

Description

  • Backup fails with the error: "VSS error 0x800423f4" during a backup of the System State data source

Environment

  • Cove Data Protection (Cove)

Solution

  1. Open the Command Line as an Administrator on the device where the backup has failed
  2. Run the command:

    vssadmin list writers

  3. Check the list of writers for any where the state is not 'Stable'
  4. If the state of any writer is not stable, it needs to be reverted to the correct state. To do this, restart the services:
    1. Open Start Menu
    2. Select Control Panel and go to Administrative Tools, then choose Services
    3. Or

    4. Type services.msc and click Enter to go directly to the Services panel
    5. Find and restart the service(s) relating to the writer(s) with an unstable state
    6. Then restart following services:
      • Backup Service Controller
      • Cryptographic Services
      • Volume Shadow Copy
  5. Once all of the services are running again:
    1. Open Backup Manager
    2. Run a System State backup to confirm it completes without error
