Description
- Backup fails with the error: "VSS error 0x800423f4" during a backup of the System State data source
Environment
- Cove Data Protection (Cove)
Solution
- Open the Command Line as an Administrator on the device where the backup has failed
- Run the command:
vssadmin list writers
- Check the list of writers for any where the state is not 'Stable'
- If the state of any writer is not stable, it needs to be reverted to the correct state. To do this, restart the services:
- Open Start Menu
- Select Control Panel and go to Administrative Tools, then choose Services
- Type
services.msc
and click Enter to go directly to the Services panel - Find and restart the service(s) relating to the writer(s) with an unstable state
- Then restart following services:
- Backup Service Controller
- Cryptographic Services
- Volume Shadow Copy
Or
- Once all of the services are running again:
- Open Backup Manager
- Run a System State backup to confirm it completes without error
