Description

  • Backup completes with error: "Access is denied".

Environment

  • Cove Data Protection (Cove)

Solution

  • This is most likely due to one of the following reasons:
    1. The file's permissions do not allow the Backup Manager to access the file.
      • To grant permissions to the Backup Manager, follow these steps:
        1. Open the Backup Manager
        2. Click Preferences tab
        3. Click Advanced
        4. Enter the credentials for a user that has access to the file under Alternative user for backup
        5. Click Save
      • Alternatively if on Windows, grant permissions to the SYSTEM user to access that file, as Backup Manager runs with SYSTEM permissions on Windows.
    2. The file is not located on the machine, but is redirected or it is a symlink to the file on another machine.
      • Make sure the file is physically present on the machine.
      • If the file is on a network share on another device, use the Network Shares datasource to back up that file.
    3. You are using the Encrypting File System (EFS) as part of Windows Information Protection and the certificate for decrypting the data is not present for the user and device where the Backup Manager is currently running.
      • Make sure the certificate used for decrypting the data is:
        • Physically present on the machine where the Backup Manager is running.
        • Accessible to the user that Backup Manager is using for its service (so if you run the Backup Manager under another service instead of as a local system account, make sure that user has access to the certificate being used to decrypt the data).
