CSP vs. non-CSP tenants

In the Microsoft ecosystem, CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) tenants and non-CSP tenants are different types of relationships and management models for using Microsoft's cloud services.

CSP tenant

A CSP tenant is managed by a CSP who resells Microsoft services, handles billing, and provides support and additional services. This model offers flexibility and value-added services.

  • Managed by CSPs: A CSP tenant is managed by a Cloud Solution Provider. CSPs can either be Direct CSPs (with a direct relationship with Microsoft) or Indirect CSPs (working through an Indirect Provider).
  • Service Reselling: CSPs purchase Microsoft cloud services (like Microsoft 365, Azure, etc.) and resell them to their customers. They handle billing, support, and often provide additional services and solutions.
  • Delegated Admin Privileges: CSPs often have delegated administrative privileges, allowing them to manage their customers' environments, such as creating and managing users, configuring services, and providing support.
  • Flexible Licensing: CSP tenants typically benefit from flexible licensing models, enabling monthly or annual billing, and the ability to adjust subscriptions as needed.
  • Value-Added Services: CSPs often provide additional value-added services, such as consultancy, migration assistance, and customized solutions, which are layered on top of the standard Microsoft offerings.

Non-CSP tenant

A non-CSP tenant is managed directly by the customer with services purchased directly from Microsoft. Customers are responsible for their own administration and support.

  • Direct Relationship with Microsoft: A non-CSP tenant is directly managed by the end customer, without any intermediary CSP. These tenants purchase services directly from Microsoft.
  • Self-Service Management: The customer is responsible for managing their own services, including provisioning, configuration, and support. They handle their own billing and account management through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, Azure Portal, or other relevant interfaces.
  • Standard Support: Non-CSP tenants receive support directly from Microsoft, based on their support plan. They do not receive the additional support and services that might be offered by a CSP.
  • Fixed Licensing Models: These tenants typically use standard licensing models offered directly by Microsoft, which may include annual commitments and less flexibility compared to the CSP model.
