How to set up a new device for N-able Backup in the N-able Backup and Recovery Web Console

Solution

  1. Create a new device
    1. Log into the Backup Management Console
    2. In Dashboard view, click blue Add button
    3. Choose deployment method
      • These instructions cover the Regular method
      • Additional instructions for Automatic deployment are here
      • Additional instructions for Documents deployment are here
    4. Enter Device name
      • Will always be all-lowercase, cannot have spaces or most special characters
      • Supported special characters are '.', '@', '_' and '-'
    5. Choose partner to create device under
    6. Click Next
    7. Copy down Device name and Password and click Finish
  2. Install the Backup Manager
    1. Download the Backup Manager here
    2. Run the installer as administrator on device
      1. Right-click installer > Run as administrator
    3. Follow installation prompts
      • Device name and Password are from step #7 under part 1 of this guide
      • Security code (also called encryption key) is user-specified
        • Please note: we don't store encryption key and can't retrieve it if lost
        • Recommended that you store in safe place, or use password manager to keep record of it
        • Security code is necessary to restore data if device goes down later
    4. Once installed, follow user guide for setup
