Description

  • Bare Metal Recovery fails with the error: "Virtual Disaster Recovery has invalid or incomplete descriptor."

Environment

  • Cove Data Protection (Cove)
  • Bare Metal Recovery

Solution

Scenario 1:

BackupFP log shows:

[2018-01-31 13:48:18.345206] [W] [01240] [BackupMixin] BMR disk preparing failed: Restore into drive with GPT partitioning scheme is not supported by your hardware boot mode (BIOS). Change boot mode to the UEFI and start restore again.

  • Boot device in UEFI mode to run the restore successfully

Scenario 2:

Bare Metal Recovery fails with Error: System State\ASR Writer\BCD\\\?\Volume{c142b69c-f3bc-11df-b35d-806e6f6e6963} Virtual Disaster Recovery has invalid or incomplete descriptor.

  • The issue can be caused by disk size difference if the target disk size is less then source disk size even by a few kilobytes
  • Change target for restore to a larger disk with sufficient space
  • Alternatively, run clean all command through diskpart:
    1. Open Disk management in the Bare Metal Recovery tool's Restore tab
    2. Run these commands:
      1. list disk
      2. select disk #
        • where # is the number of the main disk drive, as obtained from the list disk command
      3. clean all
        • Please note: this command may take a long time to run, depending on disk size
        • For very large disks (1TB+), this may require letting it clean overnight
