Symptom
Report upload or generation is failing with the following error:
The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized
Solutions
The error message you’re getting means that Report Manager/N-compass is not able to authenticate with SQL Reporting Services. It could be out of date credentials or a Windows authentication issue. Try the simple solutions for out of date credentials first.
Out of date credentials
Your password may have expired while you were logged in. If you suspect that possibility, see Solution 1. Or you may need to update your credentials. In that case, see Solution 2.
Solution 1
If you suspect that your password expired while you were still logged in, change your password twice. First change to a new password, and then change that password back to your old one.
- On your server, use Ctrl + Alt + Del and change your password.
- Use Ctrl + Alt + Del again to change your password back to the one that may have expired.
Solution 2
Use the Access Recovery feature in Report Manager to update your credentials.
- At the Start menu on the Report Manager or N-compass server, select All Programs > N-able Technologies > Report Manager (or N-compass) > Access Recovery.
- Under Report Manager Windows User Credentials Reset, update the credentials. We recommend that you use the local Administrator account, if available.
Windows authentication issue
If the previous simple solutions don't fix things, as a last resort, set the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key.
Microsoft Windows is having problems authenticating your credentials. Windows has provided a workaround for this issue.
Solution 3
- Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861. We recommend implementing the second method, Method 2: Disable the loopback check.
- Restart the Report Manager (or N-compass) server.
