User Password Settings and Complexity Rules

For N-central On-Premise servers, those with Administrative privileges are able to configure password settings for all user accounts in N-able N-central.

You must be in the System-level to access these settings.

In the N-central Password Settings window, you can:

  • Use pre-configured levels of password complexity

  • Configure password complexity rules

  • Set password expiry dates

  • Set lock out account attempts

  • Set time to release locked account

Set custom password settings and complexity rules

N-central allows you to set your own custom password settings and complexity rules for users.

  1. In the left-hand navigation menu, select Administration.

  2. Click User ManagementPassword Settings.

  3. Next to Complexity, select Custom from the drop-down.

  4. Under PASSWORD SYSTEM SETTINGS, you can set the following:
    The number of days after which an account's password is to expire.
    The number of consecutive sign-in attempts after which an account is to be locked.
    The time after which a locked account is to be unlocked. Note: a locked account can also be manually unlocked by your administrator.

  5. Under PASSWORD COMPLEXITY RULES, you can set complexity rules.

  6. Click Save.

Complexity Rules

Rule Description
Minimum Password Length

The minimum number of characters a password must contain.

If you specify less than 6 characters, Do not allow dictionary words needs to be disabled.

Minimum Number of Special Characters

The minimum number of special characters a password must contain.

The special characters include: ~`!@$%^&*()_-+={}[]|;:'"<>,./?

Minimum Number of Digits

The minimum number of numerical characters a password must contain.

The numerical characters include: 1234567890

Minimum Number of Uppercase Characters The minimum number of uppercase characters a password must contain.
Minimum Number of Lowercase Characters The minimum number of lowercase characters a password must contain.
Maximum Number of Previous Passwords to Remember

The maximum number of previous passwords to keep in memory. This prevents the user from repeatedly setting the same password.

Do not allow username based passwords If enabled, an account's username is prevented from being used as the password.
Do not allow dictionary words

If enabled, any words from the English dictionary are prevented from being used as the password.

If you select this option, you must not specify a Minimum Password Length of less than 6 characters.

Set a pre-configured complexity level

N-central has 5 levels of complexity that come pre-configured. To select one of these levels:

  1. In the left-hand navigation menu, select Administration.

  2. Click User ManagementPassword Settings.

  3. Next to Complexity, select a level from the drop-down.

  4. Click Save.
