Test DNS availability

Testing a domain name system's (DNS) availability enables you to verify the setup of your DNS, mail queue, and firewalls. You must specify the DNS server, port, record type, and fully qualified domain name (FQDN). N-able N-central returns a log of the test results.

This feature is only available at the system or product administrator level.

  1. On the Administrator Console in the Tools area, click Test DNS Availability.
  2. Enter the IP address of the DNS Server and Port for the DNS service.
  3. Select a Record Type:
    • A - an address record that stores the IP address associated with a domain name. For example: 192.168.40.19
    • MX - a mail exchange record that stores the domain name of the mail exchange server. For example: mail.example.com
    • PTR - a pointer record that stores the domain name associated with an IP address. For example: example.com
    • Any - any or all of the record types.
  4. In the IP Address/FQDN field, specify the IP address or FQDN to be looked up.

If you are testing using a PTR record, you must specify the IP address in reverse and add a suffix. For example, 192.168.40.19 would be 19.40.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

  5. Click Test.

N-able N-central tests the specified DNS and the Test DNS Results screen appears and displays the results of the DNS tests.
