Windows Update scans take a long time to complete

Description

• This article discusses a Windows Update Scan behavior observed after May 10, 2016 where scans take a long time to complete and cause the Agent API call to time out.

Environment

• Windows Vista SP2 and later
• Server 2008 SP2 and later
• N-able N-central

Solution

• Reports that Microsoft recently changed an encryption scheme with Windows Update, and as of May 10, 2016 end users are reporting slow Windows Update UI scans and Agent times out on the API call though N-able N-central . According to some reports, KB3153199, a kernel mode driver update, fixes the issue.
• This is in addition to the Windows Update Agent update from March 2016 (and the December 2015 rollup), and reportedly KB 3145739 can also help.
