Description

  • This article describes resolving devices mapping together by removing the N-able N-central Asset Tag with Ncentralassettool.exe

Environment

  • N-able N-central

Solution

  • When a Windows Agent is manually installed, or upon discovery by a Probe (which uses Admin credentials), the Asset Tag File, WMI entry & Registry entry will be created
  • This is used to avoid duplicate entries for Windows devices, especially in the case where a Windows device has multiple network interfaces
  • If the PC's are cloned, or VM/Guest is copied, it is necessary to delete the asset tags on a device and then to perform the discovery/manual agent installs
    • NOTE: If you discover a Windows device (using Admin credentials) and do not choose to install an agent, the Asset Tag File, WMI entry and Registry entry will still be created.
    • In this scenario, you would need to copy the C:\Program Files(x86)\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\bin\NcentralAssetTool.exe from another device which has the Agent installed
  • To delete the asset tag entries using the NcentralAssetTool.exe, please do the following:
    1. Run Command Prompt as administrator
    2. Change drive to the location of the NcentralAssetTool.exe
      • NOTE: The default location is C:\Program Files(x86)\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\bin\
      • NOTE: If the agent has been uninstalled, the tool will be removed with it, however, it can be copied from any working system.
    3. Run the following command:
      • NcentralAssetTool.exe -d
  • To overwrite the asset tag entries using the NcentralAssetTool.exe, please do the following:
    1. Run Command Prompt as administrator
    2. Change drive to the location of the NcentralAssetTool.exe
      • ?NOTE: The default location is C:\Program Files(x86)\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\bin\
    3. Run the following command:
      • NcentralAssetTool.exe -t
        • NOTE: This command overwrites all, so you do not need to use the "^-d^" switch command first
