Report Manager - Report Server cannot decrypt the Symmetric Key

Description

This article provides brief information and steps to resolve the following error when running a report:

            The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. (rsReportServerDisabled
        

Environment

  • N-able N-central All Versions
  • Report Manager All Versions

Solution

If you do not have a backup of the key, you will need to delete encrypted content as follows:

1. Open Reporting Services Configuration Manager and connect to your Reporting Server.

2. Select 'Encryption Keys' from the menu on the left.

3. Under 'Delete Encrypted Content', Click the delete button.

4. Click on Apply

5. Re-run the report

After the above settings are complete:

1. Verify you can open I.E as administrator and browse to http://localhost/reports
2. Verify Microsoft reporting services is using the local System as the Service account.
~ If it is not do not change it to use the local system account in windows services.
~ The change must happen in Reporting Services Configuration Manager.

3. In Reporting Services Configuration Manager under Databases the Current Report Server Database Credential should be Local System as well.

4. Lastly, Re-install Report Manager software
