Description

  • This document will guide you on how you can share a probe for a multiple sites on a specific Customer level.
  • The customers with a principal headquarters and smaller remote offices can install a probe at the headquarters office and share it with the smaller remote offices if these locations are connected using a VPN or reside on an MPLS network.

Environment

  • N-able N-central
  • Patch Management

Solution

  • To share a probe between customers or site:
  1. In the navigation pane, click Administration > Probes.
  2. Select a probe and click Assign Probe.
  3. In the Assign Probes window, under Monitoring, expand the list of Customers/Sites if necessary.
  4. To make this probe available for associated sites, move the various Monitoring, Discovery, and Caching sliders to On.
  • Monitoring: Lets the probe monitor devices on the site
  • Discovery: Lets the probe schedule and execute discovery jobs on the site
  • Caching: Lets the probe host patches and miscellaneous N-able N-central files on the site
  1. Click OK to save the configuration.
  • If you remove a shared probe from the customer level for any reason, all features related to the probe are removed or disabled.
    • Please note that if you move a probe after it has run a discovery, but you haven't imported the discovered devices yet, they will remain under the original Customer/Site until they are imported and moved.
  • In the event that more than one probe is available to an agent for Patch Cache data, the agent will start with an arbitrarily ordered list provided by N-able N-central and perform a latency test.
    • The agent will then connect to the probe with the best response and give that probe a priority of 1.
    • The remaining probes are then priority ordered by response.
    • After that first connection, however, the probe will use the last known good probe that it was able to connect to as its highest priority, then try the next probe in the list only if the primary is unavailable.
