Description

  • System State backup job fails with error "Failed to recognize volume name in path: ...\example.exe"
  • BackupFP logs shows error "Failed to recognize volume name in path: ...\example.exe"

Environment

  • Cove Data Protection
  • N-able RMM

    • Backup & Recovery
  • N-able N-central
    • N-able Backup

Solution

  • Backup Manager scans registry during system state backup and can find a record with a value of "?\example.exe" - meaning it contains an odd symbol or special character, which couldn't be parsed.
  • This can also happen when this links to a network share, Backup Manager requires this to be held locally so change the location of the data and remap in the registry.
  1. Open Regedit.exe
  2. Make a backup of the Registry before making changes
  3. Search Registry Key for "....exe" found in logs or error
  4. Check the results and confirm path in the Registry Keys
  5. Correct the entry
