Monitor Windows vcenter server

Description

This article describes how to configure the monitoring of a Windows vCenter server.

Environment

N-able N-central

Solution

  1. Create a service template at the Service Organization (SO) level:
    1. At the SO level, go to Configuration > Monitoring > Service Templates.
    2. Click ADD.
    3. Name it - Servers - Windows - vCenter.
    4. Select Servers- Windows for the class.
    5. In the services, add Guest Status - VMware.
    6. Leave defaults and click OK.
  2. Create a filter to target the devices. Use the criteria Application > Application Name = VMWare VCenter Server.
  3. Create a rule to auto-deploy the service template:
    1. At SO Level, go to Configuration > Monitoring > Rules.
    2. Click Add.
    3. Enter the name VMware vCenter (Windows).
    4. Select the filter created in the previous step.
    5. Go to the Monitoring tab and add the template created in step 1.
      Optional: Add the VMware Guest notification profile to the rule.
    6. Go to theGrant Customer/Sites access tab, add any customer required, and select the box to add any new customer/sites if desired.
    7. Save the rule.
  4. Create a discovery job for the vCenter on Windows servers:
    Note: In order for the monitoring to work, the device must be discovered with the `'virtualization discovery'' credentials for vCenter.
    1. Click Actions > Run a Discovery.
    2. Select the probe, and then go to the Virtualization tab.
    3. Place a check in Perform Virtualization Discovery:
    4. Verify that the appropriate CIM and Webserver ports are configured
    5. Click Add New Account and enter credentials that have admin access to the vCenter server.
    6. Save to run now.

This automatically applies the monitoring service template and notifications to all Windows vCenter servers.
