Discovery job for a single IP address scans the entire range

Description

When configuring a discovery job, it is common to enter the wrong subnet mask and scan more devices than intended.

Environment

N-able N-central version 9.x and later

Solution

When entering the IP address and subnet mask, it is common to enter the mask you most commonly use when configuring a NIC. This configures the NIC to use the whole subnet as local. When configuring a discovery, the same logic applies:

  • A subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 will scan 254 IP addresses.
  • A subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 will scan a single IP address.

If you are looking to scan a single IP, enter only the single IP in the Range field, or use the following format:

192.168.0.100/255.255.255.255
