Description

This article describes the issue when a device has an old or otherwise invalid IP address listed in the Address drop-down list.

Environment

N-able N-central 9.x and later

Solution

N-able N-central looks at several sources for address information on a device including DNS. Outdated or incorrect reverse-lookup information can result in invalid data being added to the list of known addresses for a device in N-able N-central.

Configure DNS Scavenging every 12 hours for stale records.

  • The DNS Scavenging setting helps ensure that environments using DHCP do not detect duplicate devices based on multiple DNS entries for the same device.
  • No-refresh and Refresh combined should be equal to or less than your DHCP lease. For example, with an 8-day DHCP lease set the No-refresh to 4, and the Refresh to 4.
  • From your DNS server, choose to Scavenge Now to get the process started.
  • Ensure you configure Scavenging for both Forward and Reverse lookup Zones.
