Description

  • You find that client PCs reboot seemingly on their own toward the beginning of the day and doesn't appear to be following any reboot windows

Environment

  • N-able N-central
  • Patch Management

Solution

  • The most common cause for this is that you have the Run Patch Installation Window If Missed option checked in your Patching Profile.
  • You can confirm this by navigating to the following:
    1. Pull up the Device in N-able N-central.
    2. Select Settings from the white band.
    3. Select Patch Management from the blue band.
    4. From beside the Patch Management Profile: drop-down, select the View/Edit button.
    5. In the newly-opened tab, scroll down to the Run Missed Install Window When Device Comes Back Online section.
    6. Confirm whether the checkbox next to the Run Patch Installation Window If Missed option has been checked.
  • If this is enabled, there's a good chance that our agent had called Windows Update to install patches and that one of the included updates was an OS Upgrade (such as the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, or the Windows 10 Creator's Upgrade). With Operating System Upgrades, once the upgrade starts, any reboots which take place are initiated by the OS Upgrader, and not by our agent. The device will continue to reboot as many times as needed for the upgrade to complete.
